We are deeply troubled to learn that five Malaysians from the Malaysian Battalion 850-12 (Malbatt 850-12) and one from Malbatt 850-11, newly deployed to Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), were injured in an Israeli strike in Sidon.
These Malaysians, who courageously serve as peacekeepers, were struck by debris in an incident that has already claimed the lives of three Lebanese civilians and injured several others, including Lebanese soldiers.
This reckless act puts peacekeepers and civilians alike in serious danger and undermines stability in an already tense region.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia condemns such violence and calls on the international community to hold those responsible accountable. The safety of peacekeepers must be protected, and any threat to them is a threat to peace itself.
Our hearts are with our injured personnel and their families during this difficult time. Malaysia remains committed to peace, and we urge all parties to respect the mandates and safety of peacekeeping forces operating in Lebanon and beyond.
